The granule layer is the most visible part of asphalt shingles. In addition to protecting the asphalt-saturated backing material from UV rays, the granules are imbued with features such as the roof color. More than a few homeowners are concerned when they see granules in the rainwater runoff, but is this something you should worry about? Roof replacement contractor Blue Sky Roofing takes a closer look.
Granule Loss: Should You Be Worried?
The granules on asphalt shingles are made from crushed stone and minerals. Traditional or “three-tab” shingles are typically made using a single granule color, while laminate or “architectural” shingles are made with a combination of two or more granule colors. It is not uncommon for asphalt shingle granules to come loose, even when it’s relatively new, as it’s part of normal roofing wear and tear.
That being said, it is not normal for a large amount of granules to come loose, to the point where it looks like someone dumped a day’s worth of used coffee grounds into the gutters. Since the granules are pressed into hot asphalt during manufacture, there’s no reason for a large amount of granules to come off, unless it’s caused by premature wear and tear, or if your roof is too old.
What Can You Do About Loose Granules?
Roofing companies like us recommend that you schedule a roofing inspection if you notice unusually high amounts of loose granules, especially if the asphalt shingles are still within warranty. Ignoring such signs may result in “bald” shingles, wherein the asphalt layer is exposed to UV rays, which can lead to roofing failure if not addressed in time.
We also recommend conducting visual roof inspections on a regular basis, which you can do from the ground using only a pair of binoculars. Since asphalt is colored black, balding shingles would be easily recognizable, especially if you have a light-colored roof. If it is safe enough for you to do so, inspect the gutter contents for loose granules. Inform your roofing contractor if you find unusually high amounts.
